Becoming a mother is a feeling like no other. From experiencing the first flutter and kick in your tummy during pregnancy to the tears shed as you wave goodbye to your wee on his first day of school, motherhood is a rollercoaster ride of hugs and love, timeouts and band-aids.
Rachael Boley is the mother of three sons. She joyfully rears twins and their younger brother.
She recently reiterated a beautiful dedication to all sons and their mothers that was originally written by mom of four Tabitha Studer of Pennsylvania for her blog. The words ring true for many moms.
Rachel shared the tribute on her Facebook and Instagram pages, a passage that moms everywhere are falling in love with. She wrote:
“A mother is her son’s home base. You are home to him.”
These words are completely true. While moms are trying to mold their sons into independent and strong men, they become a safety net for these little boys.
“When he learns to walk, he will wobble a few feet away from you and then come back, then wobble a little farther and then come back. When he tries something new, he will look for your proud smile. When he learns to read, he will repeat the same book to you 20 times in a row, because you’re the only one who will listen that many times. When he plays a sport, he will search for your face in the stands.”
But this magnetism between a son and his mom doesn’t end when he becomes an adult. Even as a grown man, a son still needs his mother, his home base.
“When he is sick, he will call you. When he really messes up, he will call you. When he is grown and strong and tough and big and he feels like crying, he will come to you; because a man can cry in front of his mother without feeling self-conscious. Even when he grows up and has a new woman in his life and gets a new home you are still his mother; homebase, the ever constant, like the sun.”
While raising rough and tumble, rambunctious, sometimes rowdy boys can be a challenge, when they show their softer side to their moms, it’s a beautiful moment. Parenting boys into self-sufficient, faith-following, loving and kind men may be a daunting task, but being that home base for them will help sons prevail.
All children should know and be reminded of what treasures they are, what a blessing they are. Moms should remind themselves of what an important role they play in molding them into wonderful adults and to relish that role of home base.
