Six-year-old Harvey Strait probably does not have any idea that his grandfather, George Strait is a world renowned country singer. All he knows is that he is going to sing a song onstage with his grandpa, and as long as grandpa is next to him he will be okay. As the audience applauds and cheers, George Strait introduces Harvey by announcing, “This is my grandson, and he’s going to sing with me.” The cheers grow louder, as the crowd delightedly welcomes the little six-year old holding a microphone. Little Harvey stands patiently next to George, waiting for his cue to sing along with his grandpa.
This endearing duo is proof of the bond between a grandparent and a grandchild. There is a special and unbreakable relationship between grandparent and grandchild. Children who spend time with their grandparents receive an extra dose of love, care, and affection. While parents are the real authority figures in their own home, grandparents are always there to help when needed.
There are many things that young children can learn from their grandparents. Values that aren’t taught in school, a new hobby, or any skill such as sewing, baking, gardening, and in Harvey’s case singing, can be passed on to the children. Grandparents have lived through quite a lot in their lifetime and so there may be one or two life lessons worth learning from them. Virtues such as patience, prudence, self-control and honesty are valuable lessons that could be instilled in the children.
The presence of grandparents in the home also provides a sense of security for the younger grandchildren, as well as emotional support. George’s musical talent has obviously had an impact on the young Harvey, who didn’t seem at all intimidated to stand before an audience and sing with his grandpa. The little boy, without any sign of nervousness, patiently waited until it was time for him to sing the chorus. As his grandpa turns to him, he recognizes his cue and begins to sing into the microphone, joining his grandfather for the last chorus of the song.
As the song comes to a close, George turns to Harvey, bends down and gives his grandson a hug and a kiss on the head. The crowd cheers and Harvey waves at them as he exits the stage.
The young boy displayed an impressive stage presence that he could only have picked up from his own grandpa – proof that children have much to gain from spending time with their grandparents. Listen below to their endearing duet.
